Let’s discuss some of the basic questions that go with the geographically of Great Britain.
a)    What is the name of the largest island in Europe? ( Great Britain ).
b)    How is it separated from the continent? ( by the English Channel).
There are   different ways to cross the channel.Name some of them
( by plane, by ferry…) You can cross the tunnel by plane, by ferry .
Now there is another way : by tunnel.Britain is not an island any more. Today you can travel by train directly from London to Paris.
The journey is fast and comfortable. You can also take your car with you on one of the super fast trains, made especially for the tunnel.
                         Controlled practice activity.
Look at the information about the Channel Tunnel . Find answers to these questions:
a)    How many train tunnels are there? ( three tunnels, not one );
b)    Is the tunnel in the sea or under the sea ( under the sea);
c)     How long did it take to build it ? ( six years);
d)    Where are the drills now?( The  French engineers took their drill out , the English engineers left their drill inside the tunnel).
Now only one thing is left – to read the summary about the Channel Tunnel       Eurochannel(Copies are given to the pupils).
                                           Britain was an island
A long time ago, Britain was joined to France. Then about 8, 000 years ago, the level of the sea rose and Britain became an island. The result was the channel.
The French had  ideas for a tunnel between France and England as early as 1802,but the Englishmen did not show much interest. The sea kept foreigners out- including friendly ones like Napoleon ! You can cross the Channel by plane, ferry, hydrofol… Now there is another way : by tunnel. Britain is not an island any more.
The Eurochannel Tunnel opened in 1994 after six years of work. The cost increased from 4.6 billion to ever 11 billion. In fact , there are three tunnels, not one. There are two tunnels for trains and one service tunnel for repairs and emergencies. The Channel tunnel is 50 km long, it is 130 m under the sea.
Journey time in the Tunnel is 21 minutes. Now , the journey  from London to Paris takes only three hours. Very  soon the channel will be connected to London by a highspeed railway line. About 20 million people use the channel.

                                                             Procedure.
I Introduction.
II Warming-up.
T: We are going to speak about unusual Australian world of animals and plants. Your geography teacher told me that you know a lot about Australia and we discussed some facts about Australia today. So let’s remember and sum up everything we know about this wonderful place.
                                                     Australian fauna
Because Australia is an island for millions of years its wildlife has been able to evolve independently.
The animals of Australia are particularly interesting because many of them are distinctly primitive. There are groups of animals whose relatives have long since disappeared from other parts of the world. Many of the animals found in this country are unique.
Australia is home to a variety of native mammals both on land and in the surrounding oceans. They include marsupials, monotremes and placental
mammals. The largest number of the mammals, almost half, is the marsupials, which include the kangaroo, koala and wombat.
The word marsupial is derived from the Latin marsupium, which means pouch. The pouch gives protection to the very young animal and contains  the teats from which it feeds. Nourished on its mother’s milk, it grows in the pouch to a well – developed stage before it leaves the pouch. The only other country where marsupials are still found is America, and only a few species remain.
The next group of mammals are the monotremes, the only egg- laying mammals in the world. They have one opening which serves for reproduction and for the elimination of waste products. This group is represented by the platypus and the echidna.  The other native land mammals are the bats, rats, mice and the dingo. Australia’s bird species include the emu and kookaburra.
Around 55 million years ago Australia belonged to Gondwanaland, which was made up of a number of continents. It was almost completely covered in rainforest, although much of this dried out as Australia moved towards the warmer climate.

T: Look at this table and answer my tricky questions.
1.What’s that ? What is the height of these trees ?
( Queensland Bottle tree. 20 metres).
2.It’s of course the king of Australian animals – the … It’s called a pouched animal. Why ?
( Kangaroo. Because a baby kangaroo would not have a chance of growing up if it didn’t have its mother’s pouch to crawl into. )
3.Koalas are bears, aren’t they ? Why are they called bears ? How many leaves can they munch a day ?
( No, they aren’t. Because they look like teddy bears.1.5 kg a day ).
4.What is it ? Where can they be found ?
( Termite mound. In Kakadu National Park or Litchfield National Park ).
III Speaking.
T: Now we’ll  listen to conversations. Where are the speakers ? Give reasons for your answers.

T:   Your task for today was to prepare projects about Australian animals or birds. Now I’d like to listen to some of them.
                                                        Cockatoo
Cockatoos are crested birds from rainforests, dry regions, and fields of Indonesia and Australia. There are many different species of cockatoos.
Cockatoos are long- lived birds. Many species of cockatoo are endangered
Because of loss of habitat, being shot as agricultural pests, and the sale of the young as  pets.
Anatomy : the cockatoo averages about 12 to 15 inches ( 31- 38 ) long. These parrots range in colour from white, pink, yellow, grey, and black; they all have a large , feathery head crest, and a curved bill. Males sometimes have darker    feathers or eyes than females; otherwise, males and females are hard to distinguish.
Reproduction :there are only a few eggs in each clutch (  a set of eggs laid in one nesting period ). The eggs are laid in a hollow tree cavity. Both parents incubate the eggs for close to a month, and both parents feed the chicks.
Diet : cockatoos eat seeds of grasses, berries, and nuts.
VI Speaking.
T:  Now you’ll have the beginning of the dialoque and you’ll have a minute to think of its continuation. Then act them out.
The beginning:
Alex:     Have you had a nice evening?
Boris :  Yes, I’ve been watching a documentary film on TV.
Alex:     Really ? What was it about ?
Boris :   About the largest island in the world.

I Introduction.
II Розповідь вчителя.
What  kind of country is New Zealand ? First of all, it is a long way from everywhere- three hours by plane from Australia, and about twenty-six hours by plane from London. It is a country of islands; the North Island and the South Island are the main ones, and there are many small ones.
It is along, narrow country; nowhere in New Zealand is more than 125 kilometres from the sea. It is a little larger than Great Britain, but Great Britain has a population of 57 million, and New Zealand has just 3.4 million people. It is an exciting and surprising land; as well as mountains, forests, lakes, deserts and rivers, there are places where hot water and steam explore out of the ground .
And it is a young country. The first Maori people landed there a thousand years ago, and the first British people came to live there around 1840.
The oldest tree in New Zealand is more than 1,200 years old, but you will not find many building that are more than about 150 years old. And in New Zealand today more than half the people are under thirty years old.
III Group work.
1.     Group 1 read the text and make up a plan of it.
                                              The Maori people.
The first people to settle in New Zealand were a Polynesian group called the Moriori, who arrived about 100AD, probably to hunt the huge, flightless moa birds. Maori migrations from the Pacific Islands probably began around 800 AD. The Maori intermarried with some of the Maori, but drove the rest away to the Chatham Islands. The period of the so-called “Great Migration “ of the Maori occurred in the 13th and 14th centuries.
2.Group 2 read the text about people and retell it.
                                               People
The majority of the people of New Zealand are Europeans, primarily of British (often Scottish)  origin. Maori , the indigenous New Zealanders who came from Polynesia, comprise the largest minority group. Other Polynesians, mostly from Tonga, American Samoa, and the Cook Islands, also live in New Zealand. Most of these new Polynesians migrated to the country after 1946. Immigration from the Pacific Islands and East Asia has been rising, although in the mid- 1990s immigration targets were lowered and strict English- language requirements for residency were implemented, making immigration somewhat more difficult.
3.Group 3 read the text and write a composition  about the life, culture
and the language of Maori.
                                          Language.
English and Maori are the official languages  of New Zealand. Almost all Maori speak English; the Maori language is used primarily for ceremonies and other special occasions. However, the English language spoken in New Zealand includes many Maori words, and many place names come from the Maori language. For example , the word kiwi, which refers to a native bird and a national symbol, can also mean a New Zealander; and a white person is a pakeha( A Maori word meaning “far skinned”).
